Then the light found them, an illuminated net cast about their boat, plucking them from the sanctuary of darkness’.
Professor Bernie Bernard is having a quiet beer in the Pig and Whistle Pub in the village of Bathurst entertaining fellow drinkers with a story about a research trip he undertook in the Peruvian Amazon in the 1980s. On that trip, he was attacked by river pirates and then captured by the notorious guerrilla movement the Sendero Luminoso – The Shining Path.
The guerrillas, led by the mysterious Professor Abimael Guzman, alias Comrade Gonzalo, make Bernie’s release contingent on his brother Samuel — who runs a tourist business in Iquitos, Peru — performing a dangerous and illegal task. To complicate matters, Bernie, and the beautiful Comrade Maria, fall in love. Will she help him escape and flee with him or will she remain true to the Sendero?
To add to their troubles, the notorious Carlos Monzon, head of the local cocaine cartel, as well as the Peruvian military, are hunting the brothers as they negotiate the treacherous waters of the Amazon and flee a host of competing villains intent on their demise.
But is Professor Bernie Bernard, thirty-two years later, telling a true story or is he making it up to entertain his credulous audience, an assortment of ne’er-do-well barflies?
